Web Based FTP Vs Client Based FTP

Traditionally, all interaction with an FTP server has been done through FTP clients such as CuteFTP, FileZilla and Transmit etc. These are all examples of client based FTP software. Basically, they let you upload and download files from your server, be it for a website or just off-site file storage.

The only downside to them is that like anything else, they must be installed.

Normally that isn’t a problem, but consider if you are far from home and need to access your site in an emergency, your hotel or cybercaf may not allow you to install software on their computers! This is where the first sparks of ideas for a web based solution came in, since every computer has an internet browser and can go online!

The rise of web based FTP applications has been fuelled mostly by the need for mobile apps. Consumer hunger for apps for handheld devices like the iPhone and Android continues to rise and many more developers, webmasters and bloggers etc are doing work while they are away from their main computer.

Initially the thought of connecting to your works FTP server gave some rise to concerns over security, so naturally higher tier members of staff like senior developers and management were apprehensive about using a web based FTP program to work with potentially confidential and valuable data. This was quickly picked up by the online web FTP developers who started to integrate secure connection options into their web clients. This helped sooth fears over security leaks and soon many companies began to operate from out of office locations with regards to electronic data. Naturally the benefits of this are numerous. It may be that management wants to give a presentation, and instead of taking it on a USB drive or other form of media, they can simply send it over to their company’s server, all ready to go. This method is much more reliable than having to have to remember to take your work on CD or external HD, and is often just as secure!

The fact remains however, that you are still sending your data through a third party. How do you know that the web based FTP client you are using isn’t sending a copy of all your data to an undisclosed location, or that the login information you typed to gain access to your FTP server was emailed to the admin of that site? The simple answer is that you don’t! That is why it’s crucial to read reviews about various web based FTP sites to find the most trusted ones so you don’t get any nasty surprises.

The Proper Way to Synchronize FTP Folders

File Transfer Protocol or oftentimes called FTP is a type of a network protocol which is utilized in order for the users to swap, manage and manipulate files out of a network. Such network is TCP/IP or Internet Protocol Suite based. Apparently, this involves the Internet. FTP was designed based on a client server structure. Now, it makes use of a wide variety of links for both control and data which are found on the applications from the server and the client.

Before learning how to synchronize FTP folders, it is good to know that the Window users can easily install and employ these FTP folders. This is because it is readily available for them in the form of a sell extension.

This can be found in different versions of the Windows operating system including Windows 98 SE, 2000, ME and also in Internet Explorer version 5.x.

You are probably wondering what the use of installing these FTP folders on your system is. Want they do is that they enable you to browse the FTP sites simply by using Windows Explorer if Internet Explorer. That will make things very simple for the users and this feature can be found in the IE Browsing Enhancements which is accessible once you are able to install the browser in your computer. It is another plus that you also do not have to install this yourself because this can also be found in the platforms that have been mentioned above by default. Now, if you do not have to make use of the FTP folders, you can opt to disable them.

Moving on with the process to synchronize FTP folders on your system, there have been many methods presented to the users for many years now. However, most of the experts today think that it is very much necessary for those who are managing such networks to make use of a reliable FTP synchronization application or utility. These can really assist you in order for you to make sure that you are able to keep the updated files on the folders in two or more areas, which may include two or more computers, network or USB drives and even in a storage that is put up via the Internet. One of the best things about using the tools to synchronize FTP is that they can be exploited as a standard backup program. This process is now called the one way syncing. These tools are indeed powerful and you will be able to witness this because they can maintain and save the similar file sets in not only one or two locations but in several spots.

In order for the users to make sure that they will be able to synchronize FTP folders without difficulty, they will need to verify that the utility that they are going to use is reliable and functional. In addition, there is a need to check that the features of the tool will really assist you as the user. It should have the capability of giving

the two way FTP synchronization as well as in duplicating the source folders whether or not they are active and can detect the collisions and conflicts between the files.

Setting Up FTP in Dreamweaver

Okay, you created a Web site and tested it, and you’re ready to upload it to the Web. It’s time to put the Dreamweaver publishing tools to work. If you’re using a commercial service provider, you most likely need the Dreamweaver FTP features, covered in detail in this task and the remaining tasks in this chapter. Note that you must complete the site-setup process, before you can configure the site for uploading. You also need the following information from your Web hosting service:

- The FTP host name

- The path to the Web directory (optional but useful)

- An FTP login or user name

- An FTP password

After you gather all your FTP information and complete the site setup, you’re ready to access the Dreamweaver publishing tools and prepare the program to upload your Web site. In this task, you set up Dreamweaver to connect to your server via FTP, a process you need to do only once for each site you work on. In the next task, you use Dreamweaver to upload pages to your server by using the connection you establish in this task.

Follow these steps:

1. Choose Site?Manage Sites to open the Manage Sites dialog box.Alternatively, you can choose Manage Sites from the bottom of the Site drop-down list in the Files Panel, as shown in this figure.

2. In the list of defined sites, select the site you want to publish and then click the Edit button.

3. Select the Advanced tab from the top of the Site Definition dialog box, and then select the Remote Info category from the left side.

4. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of the Access box, and then select the publishing option best suited to your Web server and development environment. If you’re using a commercial Web host (the most common option for small do-it-yourself sites), choose FTP. If you’re working at a university, a large company, or an organization that has its own Web servers, refer to the nearby sidebar, “The multiple Dreamweaver publishing options,” to understand your choices here, and check with your system administrator to find out which option is best for your system.

5. In the FTP Host text box, type the host name of your Web server. Directory text box, type the directory on the remote site in which documents visible to the public are stored. The information you enter in this field depends on your server. In some cases, you can leave the field blank if you log in directly to your site; in other cases, you use a different path, such as users/mysite/domain. Check with your service provider or site administrator to find out how your server is set up.

6. Enter your login name and password.

Web services require a username and password to gain access to your Web server, to ensure that you’re the only person who can make changes to your Web site. If you select the Save check box, Dreamweaver stores the information on your local computer and you don’t have to retype it every time you log in to your Web server. Click the Test button to make sure that you entered everything correctly. If there are no problems, Dreamweaver responds with the message Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 connected to your Web server successfully.

7. Select the Use Passive FTP option or the Use Firewall option only if your service provider or site administrator instructs you to do so. If you a use a commercial Web-hosting service, you shouldn’t need to select any remaining options in this section

of the dialog box. Select Use Secure FTP if you have a secure Web server, but be aware that not all hosts support secure FTP. If you select this option and see an error message when you press the Test button, deselect the option and test again.

8. Click to select the Maintain Synchronization Information check box; Dreamweaver then automatically keeps track of any changes you make to pages on your local computer that haven’t been uploaded to the server. Note: I never recommend that you select the Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save check box because I think that you should test your pages on your local computer before you publish them to the local site.

Leaving this box deselected prevents the possibility of accidentally uploading errors automatically every time you save a page on your local computer. The Enable File Check In and Check Out option opens an advanced feature that can be used to track files when multiple people are working on a Web site. 9. Click OK to save your Web server information settings and close the Site Definition dialog box. You’re ready to start using the Dreamweaver FTP features, covered in the next section.

New Alternatives to Using FTP

FTP Alternative Frees File Sharing

File Transfer Programs (FTP) for large file sharing management are becoming outdated technology. Productivity tools through SAAS (software as a service) technologies are the new FTP replacement.

Instead of using FTP, users simply sign up to a Web software service that provides user access to automated file transmission, tracking and alerts. The Web-based software allows for security and organization far beyond the capabilities of any FTP files.

The Drawbacks of File Transfer Programs

Working professionals who must routinely work in and share large files for a living have long battled the drawbacks of transmitting through FTP files. FTP requires special software or hardware. It takes time to set up and to transmit files, with few tracking alternatives. Workers spend precious time checking with coworkers on the status and revisions of project files. Security is always questionable. But Web based SAAS (software as a service) offers an FTP replacement that requires no special downloadable software. With only an Internet connection, users can immediately share large files with streamlined efficiency and optimal security.

Web Based Productivity Tool Means Higher Work Productivity

Sending and managing files from web-based SAAS programs revolutionizes how professionals function and do business.

Not only is file sharing faster with almost instant transmission, but tracking and retrieving files

is far more efficient and sophisticated than with File Transfer Programs.

Professionals never again have to wonder who was last working on a file or when. A Web-based software productivity tool tracks, with date and time stamps, every time a document has been opened and/or revised, including all comments. Every team member of a project gets alerts through email and other ways every time a file has been updated.

An FTP alternative also cuts down user time spent retrieving files. Instead of relying on just one way to organize files, users can tag files with multiple titles

to be accessed through any number of keyword searches.

With less time spent sending, retrieving and tracking documents, professionals have more time to focus on quality and accuracy of work.

The Security of Leaving FTP Files Behind

There is no comparison to the old way of dealing with the uncertain structures of File Transfer Programs and the luxury of working in the multi-tiered security of an SAAS ftp alternative. The streamlined secure automation of the latest Web productivity tools transforms how colleagues function together with big projects. The Web has made cutting-edge productivity tools into the FTP replacement.

How to Install WordPress in 1 Day

WordPress has become one of the most popular blog publishing systems used on the Internet today. WordPress was designed and is currently maintained by the Open Source community. It is distributed under the GNU General Public license free of charge.

In this post, I will explain how to install WordPress using Fantastico, an application that will automatically install WordPress within 5 minutes. From selecting a hosting company to publishing your blog, I will attempt to cover all the details you need to know. So, let’s get started.

Find an affordable hosting company

If you are not currently using a hosting company, I suggest that you find one that has a responsive technical support team, one that offers CPanel (I will explain), and a hosting company that is affordable.

What is CPanel?

CPanel (Control Panel) is a web-based application that makes web site administration very easy.

Several years ago, I remember hosting with a company that did not offer a control panel for its customers. I had to call technical support for everything including minor requests. CPanel will allow you to take care of those minor tasks and even make changes to any server settings if needed.

Find a Hosting Company

Find an affordable hosting company that offers CPanel. Here are some suggestions:

1. Hostgator

CPanel/Fantastico/As low as $6.95 per month

2. LunarPages

CPanel/Fantastico/As low as $6.95 per month

Register a Domain Name

I recommend GoDaddy.com because of their inexpensive domain registration services. You can register a domain name for $8.95.

Register Your Domain Name with Your Hosting Company

If you register with GoDaddy, they will be the registrar on record

for your domain name. After signing up with a hosting company, you will need to change the registrar on record for your domain name (GoDaddy) to your new hosting company. Use the CPanel to change the registrar on record.

Sometimes a hosting company will offer free domain registration specials to new customers. Take advantage of these offers. If you choose to register your domain with your hosting company, your hosting company will be the registrar on record.

MySQL Database

MySQL is an open-source database that is included with your hosting membership. WordPress stores data in MySQL databases (Blog Entries, Comments, Archives, etc). Setup a MySQL database before installing WordPress. If you fail to do so, WordPress will prompt you to create one before proceeding with the installation.

Installing WordPress

Now the fun begins! Installing WordPress is fast and easy when using Fantastico.

Follow these steps:

1. Go to the CPanel

2. Click on “Fantastico” (Fantastico will automatically install applications such as WordPress, Joomla, Shopping Carts, Forums, etc)

3. On the left Navigation under “Blogs, click WordPress and follow the instructions

4. After the installation has been completed, you will see a view site link. Clicking the link will take you to the WordPress Admin Login Screen

5. Use the User Name and Password that you created during installation to login

Login to WordPress using the Admin password and username you created in WordPress.

Write Your First Blog Entry

Follow these steps to publish your first blog entry:

1. From the top Nav, click on Write

2. Click Posts

3. Enter a title for your Blog

4. Type your blog entry into the “Post” field

5. Click Save

6. Click Publish

7. Click “View Site” to view your post

Success!

That’s it. You have successfully installed WordPress under your own domain name and published your first blog entry. Next time in the “WordPress How-to” series, I will cover advance topics including how to install templates, how to install plugins, explain pinging, and how to optimize WordPress for search engines.

Jay Ess is a former Microsoft employee and consultant who is very passionate about Internet technologies. You can learn more by reading his blog at [http://tightbrain.com].

There is no need to explain the basic features of an FTP protocol. Unlike the HTTP file protocol, FTP is often considered a more hassle free file transfer mechanism. For one thing, it supports any file size and is more stable than HTTP connections. You can also easily resume file downloads/uploads in case of lost Internet connection or other technical problems.

One of the most common questions people have is how to do a direct FTP file transfer between two servers.

It is no secret that most FTP software programs would only go so far as to allow an indirect file transfer. In other words, you will first need to download all the files to your computer using one of such FTP clients, and then upload them back onto the server of your destination.

Some programs and scripts automate this process, but they will still need to use your computer’s hard drive as an intermediate step, which might definitely use up your available bandwidth and, depending on your Internet connection, take hours to complete. Clearly, this is not the most efficient way to do a file transfer.

An SSH transfer is certainly a safer and faster alternative to an FTP transfer. But not all web hosting plans and providers provide SSH access for their customers.

SSH access can be restricted for security reasons as well.

If you are looking for a hassle-free direct FTP file transfer solution, your best bet is to use a web FTP transfer application. These easy-to-use applications allow one-click file transfers between FTP servers. You can transfer entire directories with only one click of a mouse.

But the best news is that you will not need to use your own Internet connection to do an FTP transfer – powerful servers and high speed / high bandwidth network connectivity will ensure that your files are moved in one swift action. You can also run your transfer in the background mode, if your Internet connection is unstable, resume and schedule your transfers as needed.
